Just Start

Why am I doing this??? What am I doing??? Why now???

Oh boy. This is it. I’m gonna NIKE this thing and “just do it”! I’m gonna heed the advice of a superstar sister-in-law of mine. A couple of years ago, she had just moved across the country, with husband and two teenagers in tow, found a cute historical home in town, and settled in. Not only that, while she was at it, she completely made over a couple of pieces of furniture. These were cabinet base and hutch type deals and they turned out super cute. Now, I see this and think, “What the hell is my problem? Why can’t I get my head out of my arse and complete just a couple of my (35) projects?” I wasn’t moving cross-country, or even across town. We’d been living in the same house for 15 years! My kids were teenagers, I wasn’t working full time, blah, blah, blah. So I asked her, in awe, “How did you do this? How did you take on these projects, and complete them, in the middle of everything else you’ve got going on???” I hope she understood the affection with which I was asking. Either way, all she said was, “Really, I just start.” That was it, my friends. Just start. Of course, then I feel like a ding-dong. How did I not know this? Seriously, what was my ding-dang problem?

Fast-forward a couple of years and finally, here I am. I’m just gonna start. Wish I could say I went home that very day to “just start”, but as we all know, life happens. I figure I’d better not look back, probably shouldn’t count the days it has taken me, or curse my own procrastination. Nope, let’s just move forward. No make-up, lousy hair, and wearin’ my grubbies, this won’t be my best selfie, but here I am.

And why??? Oh yeah, there’s that. I’m a communicator. Words are my friends. That’s why I’m a graphic designer; the combination of art and words to communicate is my thang. Makes me happy. And now, we live in this world where everything and everyone is right there at our fingertips! I can communicate with you right here, right now, even if you happen to be a half a world away. That’s amazing! The way I see it, the odds are in my favor that there are enough other like-minded peeps out there with whom I can share and communicate, and we can all be a little better for it. Why??? No, more like Why not?
